Sooooo recently parts of the internet exploded with unbridled excitement and joyous rumour milling when Bethesda teased a very short and cryptic video via Vine. With completely reasonable expectations most gaming media outlets, and users alike, instantly assumed it was a tease for Fallout 4. Actually it’s not too hard to see why when you watch it.
Obviously those who were more clued up knew better.
Although it was clearly wishful thinking from us all; based on user reactions alone Bethesda was clearly on the money with this short. Of course Fallout 4 wasn't the reality and certainly wasn't ever going to be – at least not for another year yet – but the buzz around the footage was immense because: what if?
In any case, on April 22nd all of our speculations were laid to rest when this full length, live action trailer for ‘The Evil Within’ débuted, and it certainly didn't look like Fallout 4.
Now personally I'm not a fan of live action trailers because they never really deliver the goods. They are all pomp and show with barely any relation to the final product; but my annoyances are reserved for another post. Needless to say, their purposes are for us to tentatively nibble the bait and then eat the worm later on. However this new trailer for ‘The Evil Within’ manages to avoid all of those blatant lies and hammers home something different - atmosphere.
Did you watch that shit?!
It’s like Silent Hill, Saw, and Hellraiser all got drunk and freaky one night; then 9 months later. BHAM! Tentacle hiding box head and his 4 armed blood dwelling sister ruined your life!
‘The Evil Within’, or ‘Project Zwei’ for those of you with your ear to the ground, is being directed by Shinji Mikami (creator of Resident Evil, Vanquish and contributor to numerous other titles) and will see this new title as his last directorial job.
Even though this is sad news we can safely assume that Shinji Mikami will put his heart and soul into this final project, striving to squeeze the best quality of horror from his team of 100 at Tango Gameworks. I think we can all agree it’s about time we see a return to decent horror that really hits the nerve.
Indeed information revealed from Gemastu about some of the games key features show a lot of promise for this new horror title. It really seems to hark back to the true meaning of ‘survival horror’ which, of late, most games in the genre have taken some generous liberties with.
Even though there’s only a sliver of information revealed and currently a handful of screenshots available at the official website, so far ‘The Evil Within’ is already showing great promise. I can’t wait to see what else the studio has to reveal in the upcoming months.
‘The Evil Within’ is slated for 2014 release and I, for one, will be keeping a keen eye on its progress.
