“Batman: Arkham Origins Will Have Multiplayer” According To Kotaku “Tipster”

Rrraaagh! Me no like your face!

Yesterday Kotaku writer Jason Schreier went out on a limb to claim that the newest Batman title will have a multiplayer mode

“The newest Batman game will have a multiplayer mode, we've heard from two independent sources.”

In the article he mentions receiving details from a tipster explaining about one type of multiplayer mode so far. It involves factions/gangs belonging to notorious villains such as Bane or the Joker, whose tasks are to take out “THE BATS!” Although it must be stressed that nothing is confirmed.

The details are:

“[…]according to our tipster: during at least one section of multiplayer, you play as a member of Joker or Bane's gang while trying to take down Batman and Robin. The villains involved—who may be playable and customizable—include Killer Croc, Deadshot, Firefly, Black Mask, Deathstroke, and "some kind of Electroman character," our tipster said. (Maybe Electrocutioner?)”

Even though the information is scarce and unsubstantiated, so far the reactions from community members haven’t been warm.

Commenter’s on the official website forums have already started discussing their concerns. Some are worried that this is just a cash in, some that it could lead to content and quality being lost from the SP campaign, and others just generally stating they don’t want multiplayer with this next title.

And these are all legitimate concerns; past experience has shown that publishers seem to have a propensity to tack on slap-dashed multiplayer modes that either add nothing to the overall experience or even manage to detract from it.

In spite of this some forum goers are being more level headed and optimistic with this news; stating that not all games have come to ruination from such decisions, sighting ‘Uncharted 2’ and the ‘AC’ franchise as some solid examples of well done multiplayer.

The new Dark Knight game called, ‘Batman: Arkham Origins’ will be a prequel set 7 years before the events of 'Batman: Arkham Asylum', it is also the first title of the ludicrously successful series not being developed by originators Rocksteady Studios. In their place will be a direct off shoot from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment; Warner Bros. Games Montreal.

For many the development hand over already raises reasonable levels of trepidation as to how this new studio will be able to helm such a mammoth project and deliver a product equal or better to its predecessors. Add to this the rumours of multiplayer, and already things appear not to be going in the best direction for avid fans of the series.

Needless to say that only time will tell whether this next instalment is going to be a rising star or just a cash cow for Warner Bros. It’s certainly not starting off well if the reactions to this report are anything to go by.

However; please remember that even Kotaku have not been able to corroborate nor confirm their information.

So how do you feel about the next Batman title adding multiplayer to the mix? If you do like the idea, what would you like to see implemented to make things different and interesting? If you don’t; then why so hesitant?
